How to Choose a Flat Panel Detector

What pixel pitch do I need?
For general radiography (chest, abdomen, spine), 140 μm is the standard — excellent image quality at a practical price. For high-detail applications (extremities, podiatry, fine bone assessment), 100–127 μm provides measurably finer resolution. The Vieworks F-Series and DRTech EVS 2430W push to 99–76 μm for the most demanding diagnostic needs.
Wireless or tethered — which is better for my practice?
Wireless detectors provide maximum flexibility — ideal for portable imaging, multi-room sharing, and bedside workflows. Modern wireless FPDs with built-in memory virtually eliminate image loss risk. Tethered detectors are simpler, lower-cost, and reliable for fixed X-ray room installations where mobility isn’t required.
What does DQE mean and why does it matter?
DQE (Detective Quantum Efficiency) measures how efficiently a detector converts X-ray dose into useful image signal. Higher DQE = better image quality at the same dose, or the same quality at lower dose. A detector with 70% DQE requires significantly less radiation than one at 50% DQE for equivalent image quality — directly supporting patient safety (ALARA) objectives.
What IP rating do I need?
IP54 is adequate for standard clinic use. IP66 handles water jets and heavy disinfection. IP57–IP68 (Canon, Varex LUMEN, Vieworks 4343VW) allow full submersion — critical for emergency departments where detectors encounter blood, saline, and aggressive disinfectants. Higher IP ratings always add durability in busy imaging environments.
Do I need AED (Auto Exposure Detection)?
Yes, in almost every retrofit and portable application. AED (auto-trigger) allows the detector to capture X-ray exposures without any connection to the X-ray generator, making installation simple and compatible with any system — analog, CR, or DR.
